Nizonide 500mg is an antiprotozoal medicine that contains Nitazoxanide which helps in the treatment of infections caused due to protozoa. It is a single-cell parasite that survives in moist places, such as lakes, streams, and soil. It also treats diarrhoea that occurs because of Giardia or Cryptosporidium. Such medical complications are also known as Traveler’s diarrhoea.

The gastrointestinal side effects may be dose-related. Abdominal pain, diarrhoea and discoloured urine occurred more often in subjects receiving higher doses (1 gram twice daily).

 

Nervous system

 

  • Nervous system side effects include headache (3.1%). Dizziness, sleepiness, insomnia, tremor, and hypesthesia have been reported by less than 1% of the patients.

 

Other

 

  • Severe side effects include asthenia, fever, pain (pelvic/back), flu syndrome, pain in the ears, and chills in less than 1% of patients.

 

Metabolic

  • Metabolic side effects include increased creatinine and SGPT in less than 1% of patients.

 

Dermatologic

 

  • Dermatologic side effects include pruritus, rash, and sweat in less than 1% of patients.

 

Ocular

 

  • Other severe side effects have included pale yellow eye discolouration (<1%).

 

Respiratory

 

  • Respiratory side effects include epistaxis, rhinitis, lung disease, and pharyngitis.

How to use Nizonide 500mg?

  • For diarrhoea in immunocompetent patients: 500 mg twice daily with food for 3 days.
  • For diarrhoea in AIDS patients: 1000 mg twice daily with food for 14 days or until diarrhoea resolves.

 

In case of Giardiasis for Adults

 

  • For diarrhoea in immunocompetent patients: 500 mg twice daily with food for 3 days.
  • For diarrhoea in AIDS patients: 1000 mg twice daily with food for 14 days or until diarrhoea resolves.

 

Pediatric Dose in case of Cryptosporidiosis

 

  • For diarrhoea in immunocompetent patients:

 

  • 12 to 47 months: Consume 100 mg (5 mL) orally with food every 12 hours for 3 days.

 

  • 4 to 11 years: Consume 200 mg (10 mL) with food at every 12 hours for 3 days.

 

  • Greater than or equal to 12 years: Take 500 mg twice daily with food for 3 days.

 

Usual Pediatric Dose for Giardiasis

 

  • For diarrhoea in immunocompetent patients:

 

  • 12 to 47 months: Consume 100 mg (5 mL) orally with food every 12 hours for 3 days.

 

  • 4 to 11 years: Take 200 mg (10 mL) along with food every 12 hours for 3 days.

 

  • Greater than or equal to 12 years: Consume 500 mg twice daily with food for 3 days.

Precautions while consuming Nizonide 500mg

 

Nizonide 500mg is a medicine and can show unwanted side effects if not consumed in the proper way. The appropriate method of consuming the drug includes some preventive measures that should be kept in mind while consuming Nizonide 500mg. Hence a list of precautionary measure is mentioned below:-

 

  • Tell the doctor if you are allergic to Nizonide 500mg or you are allergic to any other drugs.

 

  • Inform your doctor regarding your medical history before consuming the medicine, especially people having a history of liver problems.

 

  • The liquid form of Nizonide 500mg contains sugar. Hence, do consult the doctor in case you have diabetes.
