  • The skin helps us to detect and feel the sensations via nerve endings.
  • Skin also helps to keep the body cool and in maintaining heat.

There is a huge variation in the skin colors of all the humans on the earth. The main factor through which the skin color of a person can be determined is by the amount of Melanin present in the skin. Melanin is a pigment produced by the cells known as melanocytes. The main role of melanin present in the skin is to protect the skin from the harmful UV rays produced by the sun. The UV rays can cause skin cancer but melanin behaves as a natural sunscreen which saves the skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Skin color is also acknowledged by genetic inheritance but the exposure to sunlight also changes the color of the skin.

 There are basically six types of skin that provide important clues about how to take care of it. The skin type determines the favorable treatments for it. Fitzpatrick characterized skin colors into six types :

  1. Light Skin: Always burns, never tans.
  2. Fair Skin: Usually burns then tans.
  3. Medium Skin: Burns and tans.
  4. Olive Skin: Rarely burns but tans well.
  5. Brown Skin: Very less burns and tans well.
  6. Black Brown Skin: Never burns but tans very well.

Further, there are variations of skin undertones that come under skin tones. There are basically three undertones :

  • Warm Undertones

  • Cool Undertones

The tone or condition of the skin refers to the type of skin. The types of skin can be differentiated on the basis of water level, oil level, and the sensitivity of the skin. Skin can be classified on the basis of the following types :

How to Control Oily Skin? 

1. Cleanse your skin on a regular basis

Oily skin requires proper cleaning with a gentle cleanser that makes use of effective acne medication components which can help to reduce the amount of excess oil present in the skin. 

Sweat is also a crucial factor that increases the proportion of oil on the skin. Make sure to wash your skin if you’re sweating and try not to let it stay for a long time on the surface of the skin. 

It is essential to wash your skin at intervals of time.  The most common causes behind oily skin are debris, makeup, and dead skin cells so it’s important to make sure that you remove them while cleaning your face.

Only use those cleansers which are preferred by a dermatologist and do not use alcohol-based cleaners. For those who have oily skin, they must use a foaming plant-based face wash or cleanser. In the case of acne treatment, those cleansers which are made by using salicylic acid are the best.

2. Moisturize Daily

Keep your skin properly hydrated during the day time when there is a lot of sunlight. Go for an oil-free moisturizer, that must also contain a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Sunscreen helps in the prevention of damage caused by the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. These rays can even lead to skin cancer, dark spots, and wrinkles.

Go for sunscreens that contain zinc oxide and titanium oxide to prevent acne breakouts. Sunscreen consists of a huge amount of silicon and acrylate polymers which makes them water-resistant, so they are more likely to leave the shiny film on the face which oily skin fears the most. As the sun causes the most harmful number of damages on our skin, opt for an oil-free sunscreen.

3. Don’t touch your face throughout the day 

Touching your face repeatedly can transfer and spread dirt, oil, and bacteria from your hands on your face. Touch your face only when you are cleansing, washing or moisturizing it.

4. Use blotting papers

Using blotting papers just takes 10-20 seconds and it does not dry out the skin. You can apply blotting papers to your oily areas like nose and forehead but ensure that you don’t do the scrubbing. As soon as you press the blotting paper on your skin, it absorbs the oil and removes it.

5. Apply toner to tighten up the large pores

Use astringent or freshener to reduce the oil on the skin. Ensure that your astringent must-have ingredients like alcohol and freshener must have green tea or caffeine. Apply toner only to the t-zones of your face.

The main function of a toner is to remove any traces of dirt from the skin and cleanse it properly. It balances the level of pH on the skin and soothes it.

6. Choose water-based and oil-free skincare products

As your skin has too much oil, it surely does not need more of it. So, prefer using oil-free skincare products like makeup, sunscreen or moisturizer. Use the products which are labeled as noncomedogenic (less likely to cause pore blockages). Water-based products are also a great option for those who have oily skin as it does not leave any heavy residue on the skin as they are mainly gel-based. 

7. Healthy Diet

The main cause of oily skin is also related to your gut as in what food you include in your diet affects the oil content of your face. If your skin is oily, try to maintain distance from food items that consist of sugar and dairy products. In fact, you should go for food products like nuts and legumes that have more zinc amounts in them. Zinc helps in maintaining and controlling the oil-producing glands.

8. Exfoliation

Exfoliation is a process that involves the removal of old, dead and keratinized skin cells which are tightly closed on the surface of our skin. They are responsible for the dull appearance of our skin. By doing exfoliation once or twice a week you can achieve a healthier complexion appearance, smooth skin, and enhanced skin color.

9. Use Clay mask

We may have become more advanced and modified in the beauty lane, but sometimes the oldest form of treatment remains the best of all. In the case of oily skin, clay masks are the best as they act like sponges targeting oiliness on the face by absorbing it. 

Use a clay mask that consists of French green or bentonite clay as they are great absorbents of oil. 

10. Choose your makeup smartly

Do not compromise with makeup products when it comes to your skin. Try not to use clogging foundations that are heavy to carry. Use light products which are oil-controlling and mattifying, choose powder over foundation as it is way more light. Always remove makeup before going to bed, so that your skin can feel light and free.

11. Consult a dermatologist

12. Try Retinoid

Retinoids are also known as products containing vitamin A, which accelerates cell turnover and acts as the best anti-aging products. It also reduces acne present on the face. Its main work is to reshape the outlining of the pores so that oil can easily get out of the skin.
